I know it’s early. It’s not even June for cryin’ out loud, but I will say this. Star Trek is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It may be the best movie of the summer. I know it might be a bit too soon for it, but I’m going to stand by my opinion (at least until Transformers and G.I. Joe come out). This film is a milestone for the entire Star Trek Franchise. It has loads of action with a bit of sci-fi that makes it a perfect movie for the summer. Director J.J. Abrams (who did Cloverfield and the TV show Lost) pretty much killed it in this one. This guy knows what he’s doing when it comes to great stories with dynamic characters, so trust, I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
Now I know some of you are bitching and moaning about not understanding sci-fi movies and you assume that because you aren’t fans of the series that you wont know what is going on. FALSE. There is no need to read up on Star Trek folklore (although I did, I’m a nerd like that) and there is enough action and awesome stuff to tie you over. You will truly be remiss if you don’t check this one out. First off, the action sequences are out of control. In the first 10 minutes, even before you see the title of the film you are going to be blown away. I wont tell you what happens though, its pretty much a catalyst to the story. In one sequence James Kirk (played by the brutally hot Chris Pine – He was in the Princess Diaries 2 if some of you boys needed a refresher), Mr. Sulu (played by John Cho – Harold of Harold and Kumar to my stoners out there), and some no name guy (he didn’t quite make it through the whole scene) free fall through the atmosphere to dismantle a drill that is destroying the Vulcan planet. It was the most exhilarating moment in any film I have ever seen.
Of course we can’t forget about Zoe Saldana. How beautiful is she?! Gorgeous even. She could stand to eat a burger, but that’s not the point. She steals the show as the point of the love triangle that arises between Captain Kirk and Spock. You will be surprised at who gets the girl. Who would have thought in the future so many guys would be diggin’ the chocolate. Mommy Like!
All in all, it was a terrific movie. The plot got a little confusing when it comes to the time-travel storyline, but you guys are smart. You’ll get past it. Star Trek is a fantastic movie that is worth a full price movie ticket.
Star Trek is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours 12 minutes.
