High Snobiety Interview With Sabrina DeHoff :Shoe Jewelry

In an interesting project Berlin based jewelry designer Sabrina Dehoff gets together with Nike to work on a series of sneaker jewelry. We have to admit, when we first heard about it, we thought about some new lace-locks and maybe some lace jewelry and were not very excited. When we saw the results of the collection though, everything changed. Dehoff being a high fashion designer, has a completely new perspective on the subject matter and created something very innovative for both men and women. Styled around the Nike Air Max 1 she embraced different parts of the sneaker and added her own touch with her jewelry.viahighsnobiety

Highsnobiety: What got you initially interested in designing jewelry and what makes it different from other product?

Sabrina Dehoff: The small size and that you can basically use and combine any kind of material

HS: Let's talk about your recent collaboration with Nike. How did the collaboration come about? What made this project interesting to you?

SD: Next to the jewellery I started again with a little line of silk dresses which are called Hopdresses. Basically they are oversize Silk dresses which gives you freedom to do everything in them and look great at the same time.So I thought another option to the usual high heels should be actually a sneaker to wear with and suddenly in my bathtub I thought sneaker jewellery that`s it. It makes your favourite comfortable cool sneaker, even more cooler, more individual and very fashionable and even glam. So everything came together when I contacted Nike in Berlin and they got also immediately hooked by the idea. So for this season I created the sneaker jewellery espacially for the Air Max 1.

For me it is great challenge to work on this new product and to think and create around this fabulous classic Air Max 1.

HS: Can you give us some background on the collection that you created. What was your creative process?

SD: The sneaker jewellery is part of my spring summer collection 2010 called " sweet surrender" and will be first presented on the 4th of July in Berlin. The collection consists of a clothes range and jewellery and plays with a futuristic romanctic theme. The creative process starts first with well first ideas and glimpses of something, but than of course first problems appear as well, like how to fix the jewllery actually to the shoe which had to be solved.

So I started with first paper models, tried the proportions and various shapes. What I mainly created are different shields in perspex or 23ct gold plated metal which lay over the lace parts and are fixed by lacing on the bottom and tops. The shapes are like big or smaller tongues or hearts. For the girls they are partly covered with lots of swarovski crystals while for the boys we stayed more cool and star wars. But it would not be my collection if I would not have added some little stuff as well . Here I loved working with the tips of the laces by adding golden square tips and what I love personally most are the little friends like in the style golden shield with friends, which are little metall heads moving on the laces and there will be more of them... Ah, yeah nearly forgotten for the boys other cool stuff are the shoe tips also in 23ct gold plated metal to make a future cowboy out of you.

HS: It is great seeing something new in this space and something much more creative than what the market currently offers. Do you see yourself continuing with sneaker/shoe jewelry?

SD: Yes, definetely. I just started getting into it and hopefully will be able to create a collection that will give sneaker fans something to collect on top of there shoes every season

HS: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Good luck and keep us posted on your future projects!

SD: Thank you
