Thousand Words Campaign : 22
The Pelican ©
If I were a bird, I’d be just like you,
A fat pelican on a wharf, sweet talking tourists.
I love your panache (that wingspan! That glide!)
And your gluttony too (shameless bucket beak!)
No offence, but how’d that evolve, anyway -
Not enough space in your guts for your loot?
That’s my kind of bird, wear your greed with pride,
The sybarite of the sea, hand-fed hedonist.
But what I love best is your landing style
It’s clear you’re no egotist,
For you squander your aerial elegance,
Glory and grandeur in flight,
with big webbed feet, landing gear out front,
Like a Vaudeville comic, shudder, splashdown!
Unembarrassed, you spread your wings to dry,
and I learn from your ways, my cavalier friend.
