Up. Things can only get better…
It’s been a rough week for the Tiny.Tyrant. Yes, I have feelings too. I took a moment to clear my head this week and did something I have never done before. Ladies and Gentlemen… I went to see a movie by myself. I know what you’re thinking. “This chick is crazy.” The only response I can think of to that statement is, “Yes, yes I am.” I knew there would be absolutely no one in my immediate circle that would want to see this film with me so I took the opportunity truly enjoy my Monday afternoon matinee.
Up is a film that I have seen in development for a number of years. I spent some time in San Francisco on a fantastic internship and I saw a few of the early sketches for this movie. In the animation world, Pixar is GOD and they always play a short film before all of their features. If you didn’t know that then you better get hip. Their shorts are the corner stone of the company. It’s where they started and they take a lot of pride in their history as short filmmakers. Up began with the delightful short Partly Cloudy. I’m not going to give away the plot, but the message is beautiful. It even made me cry, but I was a little sensitive to begin with that day.
The release of any Pixar movie is highly anticipated and this one was no different. Up tells the story of a broken old man who has lost everything. After loosing his wife he realizes that he has no one left. A little wilderness explorer named Russell (who is also Pixar’s first Asian-American leading character) breaks this man out of his shell as they go on an amazing adventure through the jungles of South America.
Of course there is some humor interlaced in the adventure of these two characters. You can always count on Pixar to make you laugh and cry at the same time. The first 5 minutes of the film will have even the coldest hearts (me included) weeping uncontrollably. That part might be a little heavy for kids (a gentle forewarning) but the rest of the film is a great ride that almost makes me want to go to South America in the near future.
I’m sure by now you have seen a few commercials and you are wondering, “Why so many dogs??” I don’t want to give anything away, but the dogs in the film are the stars of the film. Alpha, the intense Doberman pincher with a speaking problem had me rolling in the isles and Dug (pronounced Doug, but spelled Dug like dog… GENIUS) made me want a dog. The kind of dog that loves you unconditionally, no matter what you say or what you do. He is the epitome of “man’s best friend.” Up will no doubt be an easy Oscar winner for Best Animated Film next year.
In other words, the movie made my week a little easier. Who knows if I will ever be completely healed, but I know that with time it will eventually come. Some people use music, some people eat ice cream, but for me, I use movies to escape my world for a moment in time. In closing, I say to you take the time to do something for yourself this weekend. Take the time to heal. Things can only go up from here.
Up is rated PG and runs 1 hours and 36 minutes (not including the short).
PS: Its in 3D too!
